In media, stars play a significant role as well as in society. They do not just provide entertainment but in fact they can serve as role models. For the better or worse, they have a powerful impact on their audience/fans; how they view themselves and the world. They can even influence attitude and behavior. Moreover, fans idolize celebrities so much that they aspire to be like them. And their perspective on this events or things may change as well. This goes the phenomenal rise of the popular girl group in the Philippine entertainment industry, Sexbomb girls. Even if I was just only an infant around that time, their debut, I've heard that they were really like reallyyy popular back in the days.
The group came very long way since they first started as back-up dancers in 'Eat bulaga' in the early 2000 up until 2011 then moved past as recording artist after leaving as back-up dancers. They were a global hit! a sensation that change the perspective of women in the Philippines that were the roots of myths, where it all started. And it is a bit odd and strange for others to stereotype all Filipino women due to fact that sexbomb girls paved the way for this way of thinking(like wearing sexy and skimpy outfits and being loud!) considering the Philippines to be a very conservative country.
Based on the article/journal, the main idea is the impact of a Philippine media phenomenon specifically, Sexbomb Girls, on society influenced by Philippine media. Showing media’s capacity to create various meanings and symbolisms through their products that’ll affect the audience or the people idolizing them as well as how the people’s perspective about women in the Philippines have changed since then.
Evidence that
supports the main idea:
- Stars are very influential in representing people in
society: how people are represented in media will influence (even if only
to reinforce) how people are in society.
- They have privileged roles in defining social roles and types, which have real consequences in terms of how people believe they can or should behave (Dyer 7).
